🛠️ Essential Foundations: Square and Round Tatami Knots

Diy April 8, 2026

These traditional Japanese Tatami knots provide the building blocks for professional-grade cord work.

The Square Four-Way Knot (Kaku-yotsu-tatami)

🛠️ Essential Foundations: Square and Round Tatami Knots
🛠️ Essential Foundations: Square and Round Tatami Knots

This technique creates a sturdy cord with a square profile and distinct vertical patterns.

  • Step 1: Arrange four cords (A, B, C, D) in a cross shape and secure the center.
  • Step 2 (Clockwise): Layer the cords in a clockwise direction: A over B, B over A and C, C over B and D, and finally D over C and through the first loop created by A.
  • Step 3 (Counter-Clockwise): For the next layer, reverse the direction and layer the cords counter-clockwise.
  • Final Result: Alternating between clockwise and counter-clockwise layers maintains the precise square profile.

The Round Four-Way Knot (Maru-yotsu-tatami)

This variation results in a cylindrical, spiral-like cord.

  • The Technique: Follow the same initial setup as the square knot.
  • Continuous Rotation: Unlike the square knot, layer the cords in a consistent clockwise direction for every single layer.
  • Snugging: Pull all four cords simultaneously to lock each layer and maintain a smooth, round finish.

🎨 Advanced Patterns and Creative Projects

The Taisha Chevron

This popular design uses four different colored threads to create a repeating “V” pattern.

  • Preparation: You will need four 1.5m (60in) lengths of thread in contrasting colors (e.g., Pink, Yellow, Violet, Green).
  • Setup: Fold the threads in half, tie a simple loop, and separate the eight resulting strands into a mirrored order.
  • The Process: Start on the far left with forward knots moving toward the center, then mirror this from the far right using backward knots.

The Zipper Braid

A dense, rectangular braid ideal for durable lanyards and keychains.

  • Materials: Use flat 1/8″ craft lace.
  • Railroad Technique: Keep the core “A” strands straight like railroad tracks while weaving the “B” strand back and forth between them.
  • Consistency: Slide the stitches together snugly as you weave to ensure a uniform zipper-like texture.

Dragonfly Knot (Shishend结)

This decorative project combines basic knots to create a charming insect figure.

  • Foundation: Start by weaving a double-line button knot for the head.
  • Body & Wings: Transition into a series of square knots to form the segmented body and leave loops of varying sizes to create the characteristic wings.

💡 Professional Finishing Touches

  • Initial Loops: For any bracelet or keychain, start with a reinforced loop to act as a sturdy foundation for clasps.
  • The Flat Knot (平結び): This foundational knot is perfect for starting or ending sections. It involves crossing a left-side cord over the core, followed by a right-side cord in a specific over-under sequence.
  • Secure Terminations: Finish your projects by sliding stitches together snugly and securing the ends with two overhand knots before trimming the excess tails.
